Barnsley Hospice is seeking a motivated and reliable Maintenance Operative to join our Estates & Facilities Team.
About the Role
As a Maintenance Operative, you will play a key role in maintaining a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for our patients, families, staff, volunteers, and visitors. With a strong electrical focus, you will undertake planned preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, compliance checks, and general building maintenance across the Hospice site.
This is a varied and hands-on role where no two days are the same. You'll work across electrical systems, plumbing, joinery, decorating, grounds maintenance, and general repairs, helping to ensure our facilities remain safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.
Key Responsibilities
• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance with a primary focus on electrical systems and equipment.
• Undertake electrical fault finding, minor repairs, testing, and compliance checks.
• Complete statutory compliance tasks including PAT testing, emergency lighting checks, fire alarm testing, and legionella monitoring.
• Support general building maintenance including plumbing, joinery, decorating, and repairs.
• Assist with contractor management and ensure safe systems of work are followed.
• Support the upkeep of Hospice grounds and facilities.
• Participate in the Estates on-call rota.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and compliance documentation.
Contract Detail
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Part Time – up to 30 hours per week
Hourly rate: £13.09 - £13.75.per hour
Location: Barnsley Hospice, Gawber
About You
We are looking for someone who:
• Has at least 3 years' experience in electrical and general building maintenance.
• Holds a recognised electrical qualification (City & Guilds Level 2 or 3 or equivalent).
• Has a good understanding of electrical safety regulations and maintenance compliance requirements.
• Can diagnose faults and carry out a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks.
• Is organised and able to manage competing priorities effectively.
• Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Works collaboratively and positively as part of a team.
• Holds a full UK driving licence.
Desirable qualifications and experience include the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, PAT Testing qualification, and experience working within healthcare, hospice, or care environments.
